Hypothyroidism

What is hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is a common thyroid disorder that occurs when your thyroid gland doesn’t make enough hormones. Your thyroid regulates your metabolic processes, including how quickly you burn calories and your heart rate.

Also known as an underactive thyroid, this condition often develops in women over 60 years of age and leads to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms and side effects.

What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism?

Having an underactive thyroid can lead to a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Sensitivity to cold
  • Muscle aches and pain
  • Stiffness and swelling in your joints
  • Heavy or irregular menstrual periods
  • Thinning hair

Even though hypothyroidism is most common in middle-aged and older women, it can affect people of all ages and genders, even infants.

What causes hypothyroidism?

You can develop hypothyroidism for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • Autoimmune diseases, especially Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Too much thyroid treatment for an overactive thyroid
  • Thyroid surgery or radiation therapy
  • Certain medications
  • Congenital abnormalities
  • Pituitary disorders
  • Iodine deficiency

Your risk of having hypothyroidism increases if you have a family history of the disease, are pregnant, or had a baby within the past six months.

How is hypothyroidism diagnosed and treated?

The Firshein Center was created and conceived by Dr. Firshein to address many of today’s most pressing health issues but with the freedom of not being tied to any particular traditional health approach. In many cases, your visit begins before you step in the office with a telemedicine evaluation by a staff member.

Dr. Firshein usually diagnoses hypothyroidism through specialized blood tests that measure thyroid hormones in the blood. These screenings can help him identify thyroid disorders early on and determine the best course of controlling your symptoms and managing your condition.

Based on your diagnosis, Dr. Firshein might recommend a variety of treatments, such as synthetic thyroid medications that restore your hormone levels. He also recommends natural treatments, like IV therapy, to support your overall system.

IV therapy is an advanced supportive treatment delivering valuable, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients directly into your bloodstream. This method not only detoxifies your body, but it also boosts your immune system and reduces stress.

During IV therapy, high doses of nutrients, antioxidants, and amino acids enter your cells through your bloodstream providing a performance boost and helping to flush metabolic waste from your system.
